The Eyes and the Impossible

by Dave Eggers

The Eyes and the Impossible book cover, text over painting of woods with path and dog running on path

The illustrated story of a dog who unwittingly becomes a hero to a park full of animals.

Johannes, a free dog, lives in an urban park by the sea. His job is to be the Eyes—to see everything that happens within the park and report back to the park’s elders, three ancient Bison. His friends—a seagull, a raccoon, a squirrel, and a pelican—work with him as the Assistant Eyes, observing the humans and other animals who share the park and making sure the Equilibrium is in balance.

But changes are afoot. More humans, including Trouble Travelers, arrive in the park. A new building, containing mysterious and hypnotic rectangles, goes up. And then there are the goats—an actual boatload of goats—who appear, along with a shocking revelation that changes Johannes’s view of the world.

This year's winner of the prestigious Newbery Award!

Join the Carpe Librum Book Club for this month's meeting, where we'll discuss the book Mercury Pictures Presents by Anthony Marra. In this historical fiction novel, we'll travel back to 1940's Los Angeles to follow Maria, a producer at Mercury Pictures, as she navigates personal and professional challenges in light of WW2. Spanning from Mussolini's Italy to the Golden Age of Hollywood, this book captures a tumultuous time in both American history and culture.

New members are always welcome to join the Carpe Librum Book Club, so feel free to attend even if you never have before! Copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk beginning on March 4.
